How the calculator works
- Adding VAT: VAT = price before VAT × rate, and the total = price + VAT. At 14%, a price of 1,000 carries 140 of VAT for a total of 1,140.
- Taking VAT out of an inclusive price: price before VAT = inclusive price ÷ (1 + rate), and VAT = inclusive price − price before VAT. So 1,140 including 14% VAT is 1,140 ÷ 1.14 = 1,000 before VAT, with 140 of VAT.
- Several items: the VAT on each item (price × quantity) is rounded to two decimals and the items are then added up, as on an invoice.
The usual mistake: multiplying the inclusive price by the rate
If 1,140 includes 14% VAT, the VAT in it is 140, not 1,140 × 14% = 159.60. The rate applies to the price before VAT, not after it. So the VAT in an inclusive price is 14/114 of it, about 12.28%. In Saudi Arabia it is 15/115, about 13.04%, and in the UAE 5/105, about 4.76%.
The rates built into the calculator
- Egypt 14%: the standard VAT rate. There is a reduced 5% rate on machinery and equipment used to set up production lines, and some goods and services are exempt.
- Saudi Arabia 15%: the standard rate since July 2020.
- UAE 5%: since VAT was introduced in January 2018.
These are the standard rates. Some goods and services are exempt, zero-rated or taxed at another rate, so check the rate for your business with the Egyptian Tax Authority, Saudi Arabia’s ZATCA or the UAE Federal Tax Authority, or with your accountant. If your rate is different, choose “Another rate” and enter it.
This calculator is for a quick sum. In ProfAcc, the cloud accounting system for manufacturers, sales invoices calculate VAT as part of the entry that records them, and the financial statements come straight from the entries.
Questions
How do I calculate 14% VAT?
Multiply the price before VAT by 0.14 for the VAT, or by 1.14 for the total including VAT. A price of 500 carries 70 of VAT for a total of 570.
How do I calculate 15% VAT in Saudi Arabia?
VAT = price × 0.15, and the total = price × 1.15. A price of SAR 200 carries SAR 30 of VAT for a total of SAR 230.
How do I get the price before VAT from an inclusive price?
Divide the inclusive price by 1.14 in Egypt, 1.15 in Saudi Arabia or 1.05 in the UAE. So 1,150 including 15% VAT is 1,000 before VAT, with 150 of VAT.
Why is the VAT total sometimes 0.01 off?
The calculator rounds the VAT on each item to two decimals and then adds them up, as invoices do. Multiplying the grand total by the rate in one go can differ from that by a small fraction.
Does the calculator issue a tax invoice or an e-invoice?
No. It only works out the figures. It issues no invoice and sends nothing to the Egyptian Tax Authority or ZATCA.
Do you store the figures I enter?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and the figures are not sent to us. To come back to them, use "Copy link to this calculation".
